The round footprint was derived from the
name “World” Trade “Center”. Blue
glass represent the oceans and the rooftop gardens represent the land.
A stairway laces up through the rooftop atriums with an individual
step for each of the victims.
Fund raising events can be held like the CN
Tower Stair Climb where an average person reaches the top of
the 1776 steps in about 30 minutes. The
Memorial program forbids commercial structures, so the office space is
exclusively leased to humanitarian organizations to carry on the
altruistic ‘can-do-spirit’ that should be a permanent part of the
site. After using insurance
money to build the structure these organizations would only be charge $1
per year rent plus expenses. Design
teams from each time zone would be commissioned to customize each of the 24
rooftop atriums. The
orientation of the circular footprint is set by the solar angle of the
rising sun at dawn on September 11th striking the tallest blue
glass wall to reflect and illuminate the Statue of Liberty.
Unprecedented safety
innovations provide reassurance for occupants… besides who
would attack a building housing the World’s humanitarian outreach
programs? In January 2003 via email
Daniel Libeskind called the original
concept "... bold and striking and clearly very
carefully thought through." |
